I missed day 7, oh well I am right back on track with day 8. Woke up this morning and did my push ups, only did max 11, I wish I could repeat the 20 I did last week on Friday. The couch to 5k week 2 is kicking my butt, I am able to finish it even if I am going as fast as someone who is speed walking. I am getting bad shin splints and my ankles are killing me for the last couple of runs, my sides are also killing me but I am able to lessen the pain if I take deep slow breaths while running. Any advice here would be much appreciated.
I got home and did my shovel gloving and that is still making me sweat a lot. I will do some Wii Fit after the Barcelona / New York game.
Hey Ara,
I’ve been watching your RSS feed to see how you’re doing.
Good to see you’re still sticking with it.
As for running, a few suggestions:
1) Make sure you have proper running shoes that have been fitted by someone who has watched you run/walk. Not having proper fitting shoes can lead to problems like shin splints and sore ankles.
2) Search on the web for shin splint exercises. I remember reading about a couple that you can do while sitting at a desk on a computer. It was various tapping exercises or something. But search around.
3) Side stitches can mean a few different things - Your stomach is attached to your diaphragm, if you’ve eaten recently, your stomach is heavy and is bouncing along pulling at your diaphragm, so that could cause it. They can also be caused by being dehydrated. They can be caused by odd running posture, and I know I’ve heard a few more but can’t remember. I found I got them much more often when I was starting out running then I do now. Some people swear on breathing out when their left foot hits the ground. Others find raising your arms above your head can help. It depends on the source though.
Anyway, keep it up, it’s motivating to read your posts and that you still got through a routine even after being side tracked initially.
I’m a C25K alumni. Proper fitting running shoes are a must. The extra you’ll pay at a specialty running shop will more than pay for itself in the long run.
I delt with shin splints early on with just the walking I was doing. Sucks! This too shall pass….keep with it.
