Re: shin splints
First off, if they're bad, absolutely positively go see a doctor.
If they're the run-of-the-mill shin splints, the R.I.C.E. method really helps: [R]est [I]ce [C]ompression and [E]levation. Go get yourself some Ace bandages and some flat, flexible ice packs. These are your new friends. After a run, put the ice packs on your shins, wrap up your lower legs with the Ace bandages, and then put your feet up. Even if you're not feeling particularly splinty, this will help keep inflammation down while you train your body to handle the abuse of running.
Also, shin splints can be a good indicator that you may be pushing a bit too hard. And running on shin splints only makes them worse. Be careful with 'em so you don't accidentally sideline yourself with your own enthusiasm.

And, again, congrats. Your tweets and posts are definitely inspiring. I seriously would not have run the 10k on Sunday if I didn't see that you toughed it out yourself. It got me going.

Congrats, and good luck.

You can do it! You've made some huge progress already! You've lost 30 lbs! Keep it up. Protect your running, make time for it, make it count. It's tough at first and then it gets waaaaaaay easier. Good luck and we'll all chase you down if you stop, so don't stop. = Mike
