Three day weekend. I was pumped. My first run/jog/walk/crawl for charity was coming up. The Human Race 10k sponsored by Nike. I choose to run for the Livestrong Foundation. I was coming into it having done my first 20 minute run ever on Friday.
So Sunday came around, the day of the race. I didn’t do my normal 5 minute warm up walk. So I started running, not my normal slow ass jog that I normally do but a faster sort of run. A real run. Well my mistake. I had to do 6.2 miles that day, I should have never of started off that quick.
I was hurting and out of breath by the 1/2 mile mark. So I slowed it down started walking again. On and off again I tried to move my fat butt into gear and start running, each time I believe it was faster than I was normal to because I started to hurt a lot more than normal. So I decided to walk the rest of the path.
I finished the first mile and a half by walking. I was getting discouraged at this point because before I could run for 20 minutes, now I could barley run for 2 minutes. I told myself at the 1 and a half mile mark I would try to jog again, at my slow ass grandmas pace. I made the turn and started doing my pace, snail pace.
After I passed the mile mark I was feeling proud of myself again. I was not tired or at anyway hurting at this point, although a couple of turtles chased some rabbits around the woods beside me.
At the mile and a half point I was still feeling great. So I kept going. I made it to the mile and a half mark before I decided I needed to slow it down and start walking again. Good thing because my back started hurting again a little bit down the road. I decided to walk the rest of the way.
When I got home my feet hurt worse then they ever have before and I think I pulled something in my hip. I am not ready for the big races yet lol. Ill keep my fat ass to this Couch to 5k Program for the full 9 weeks. I don’t want to risk another injury.

great post Ara. At least you pushed yourself to the limit. Many people just sat and watched. You were out there doing it at what ever pace you needed to do. Keep it up my friend. It is happening as we speak. The miracle of movement. Friend, Bryan
And another day with exercise! Don’t go too fast too far - that is why runners quit. Stick with the program and it will pay off for you! This lifestyle isn’t about one race on one day, it’s about a life of moving and feeling better each day. You are doing it and we are all proud of you!
Great job on the 10k, Ara! :):) That’s fantastic. Sorry your hip is hurting. Feel better!
Great job on sticking with it. You will get better at pacing as time goes on. Just think of the billions of people in the world who did nothing to exercise or move forward this weekend and you stuck with it.
Bruno …your a trooper…just keep the that desire alive and it wont be along untill the vision becomes a reality…infact it will suddenly creep up on you and you wont know where it came from!
